About Me

Important** I have moved to Belgium** I will not change my location to Belgium as I do not want CS to start charging me**
My parents and the farm are still in Kanal, Slovenia. I will turn on CS and accept guests in Kanal when I return or decide to have a longer vacation at home.

I am currently enjoying my life as an expat in Brussels, Belgium. 🖤💛❤️

Dear person checking out my profile!

My Name is Manuela and I am 30 years old, originally from Slovenia, now living in Belgium. ✌
I mostly travel and host Couchsurfers together with my partner Matej Hrlec (left in the profile picture).

I come from a tiny village near a small town in Western Slovenia. The nearby town is called Kanal. Perfect for an Instagram photo session, it offers an extremely beautiful view of the emerald green Soca River, the colorful medieval town of Kanal and a stone bridge.

A popular cycling route that connects the Alpine mountains with the Adriatic Sea runs alongside the beautiful Soca River and passes by our house.

My family is very welcoming to travelers. If Matej and I are out of town and someone really needs a place to stay, they are the ones who host. 😊

Traveling is definitely one of my life passions.

To learn how I became a fan of CS, please read the story below. 📖🧚‍♂️🪄✨🦄

In my twenties, being a broke student and all, I wanted to travel, but my financial situation didn't always allow me to fulfill my needs and wishes. 😢

Then, one day, a friend of mine told me that an organization from Austria was looking for Slovenian participants for an Erasmus+ project. He explained what to expect and I was quite intrigued by the idea of spending a week with other young people from Europe, participating in various activities, sharing ideas and embracing different perspectives. Since I already knew a bit about the Erasmus program, I was expecting a good time 😁. The project was, of course, amazing, and since then, I have participated in more of these projects and each one holds a special place in my heart. I have also made many friends throughout Europe and I even visited some of them, who also hosted me! 😃

I have met many like-minded broke students who introduced me to CS. It goes without saying that I absolutely loved the idea behind it and could instantly connect with people who are part of this community.

Besides that, my hobbies include trying ethnic food, learning foreign languages, hiking, diving, swimming, kayaking, gardening, and landscaping. I enjoy conversations about traveling experiences, living abroad, different countries and cultures, politics and topics you are interested in. ♾️

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I think Couchsurfing allows you to immerse yourself in the whole experience of the place you are staying in an instant. Spending time with locals gives you new perspectives that are almost impossible to gain when you spend your days confined to traveling groups and your nights in hotels or hostels. It is one of the best forms of cultural immersion, especially considering the short period of time you spend in one place. That is why I am on Couchsurfing. 😁

Music, Movies, and Books

Since I really enjoy gardening, I would rather add a list of my favorite plants.

🌷 Tulips - I love them for their various types and colors, and they require little attention.
💐Carnation - It can be quite tricky to maintain, but the flower has a pleasant and rather intense smell (if the plant is grown at home). It is also a symbol of Slovenia and a component of the national Slovenian bouquet.
🌼Aster - They always blossom on my birthday, which is in September. I have loved them since childhood when I thought they are in bloom only for me. 💕
🌺 Fuchsia - I have liked them since childhood because the flowers look like little ballerinas.
🤍Calla lily - I just find them extremely beautiful. They bloom for almost two months, during late spring, and are low-maintenance.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I adopted a wonderful stray dog from the streets of Sofia, Bulgaria, during my student exchange. The dog now enjoys a great life on our large farm. She likes to bark, a lot!
