I think Couchsurfing is a great way to meet new people and find places to stay where you truly experience both the generosity of people sharing their home with you and being a local. It's also nice to be able to return the favor whenever people are visiting the city I live in!

Going to Burning Man in Nevada, US will probably be on the top of my list, but it's honestly really tough to choose! It was the biggest experience I have ever had, in part because it was so different from anything else I have ever tried. There is no other place like it on this Earth!
