About Me

Hello gentle reader:
I'm Howard Edson. (I occasionally use the nom de plume Captain Howard or Captain Sensei when writing about sailing). I was born at an early age (that's a joke) in Connecticut, U.S. Following college at Princeton U. and a military tour of duty in the Pacific during the Vietnam era, my meandering career has included (1) corporate staff positions with Hewlett Packard and Atlantic Richfield, (2) entrepreneur, and (3) management consultant/trainer in the field of organizational change and development. I have trained thousands of employees throughout North America and Asia in leadership development and teamwork — frequently using ropes courses, and outdoor adventures as a learning metaphor.

Additionally I authored “What Color Is Your Paradigm?” — a conceptual understanding of the relationship between one’s thoughts and results. I am presently devoting my energies to yacht deliveries, sailing instruction and private charters, and writing about boating and seamanship.

I have sailed into nearly every U.S. East Coast, Gulf Coast and the Pacific Coast port. And I have long-distance races and rallies, yacht deliveries and single-handing cruises in my wake.

In late 2008 I relocated to Seattle to be a good “grandpa” and to sail the Pacific Coast (which I've done from Alaska to Mexico).

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

The terms learner, adventurer and teacher apply, and more recently I've added vagabond. A good friend described me as getting in three lifetimes in one. And my wanderlust informs me there is so much more to see/do and the calendar reminds me that time is limited.

Music, Movies, and Books

I traveled with the Princeton Triangle Club during college and love Broadway shows and all live theater.
Movies are a close second choice. I saw "Master and Commander: the far side of the universe" more than once.
And classics such as "Breakfast at Tiffanys" , or foreign films like "Rashomon" also captivate me. And "Eat, Pray and Love" is my favorite feel-good book.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

II's a tie between raising two wonderful boys and
owning a 1946 Piper Cub J-3 when I was 15 and getting my pilot's license on my 16th birthday.

Teach, Learn, Share

I teach sailing and English
I need to learn worlds different from my own;
and I love to share life stories with a spiritual core.
