Warum ich bei Couchsurfing bin

When I have traveled through Europe, I have always stayed in Hostels. Yes, it is cheaper, but the real reason is that when you hit a new city, you have instant friends who can show you the ropes and share adventurers with. It does not look like the US has the same culture and so a friend recommended couchsurfing.com.
I have always wanted travel overland from L.A. to Texas and if I can make some friends along the way, that would be excellent.

I have been arrested by boarder guards crossing from the Czech Republic to Poland in an attempted extortion scam. Unfortunately , I spoke neither language and I was so utterly sleep deprived I did not actually understand that they were trying to shake me down for money. After a while of them waving guns around and me speaking the worst German they had probably heard in a long time, they gave up, returned my papers and let me go.
It was so surreal - sort of like being in one of those 1940s spy movies or a cold war thriller.
If I was not so befuddled, I would have been quite scared.
