The dragon tree is a tree-like plant belonging to the group of monocotyledons that has an anomalous secondary growth. It is therefore a woody herbaceous plant, rather than strictly a “tree”.
This specimen is the largest and longest-lived known in the world of its species. It is about 18 metres high and has a crown diameter of ~20 m; it has a perimeter at the base of the trunk of twenty metres and more than three hundred main branches. The flowers are small and numerous, with 6 petals and the same number of stamens of a creamy green or very pale yellow tone and are clustered in striking inflorescences that stand out from the whole leaf. It is estimated that in years of good flowering it can produce up to one thousand five hundred bunches of flowers. The trunk has an enormous cavity that rises up to 6 m in height, which is accessed through a door. In 1985, a thorough sanitation was carried out and a fan was installed inside the trunk to facilitate air circulation and prevent the proliferation of fungi.
