outside the familiar realm: what i look for in a book is a book that will offer an expansion of the world i take for granted. at least for now i'm reading books that illuminate themes and lifestyles outside contemporary times and/or american culture. authors i'm into these days include laxness, kapuscinksi, proust, and whitman, among others.
as far as music goes, i'm beginning to understand and embrace the arbitrariness of my tastes and the vast importance of my own emotional connections and associations with musicians. mount eerie, jens lekman, bonnie 'prince' billy, and the mountain goats are a few of my perennial favorites.
