ABOUT ME

I'm a bike mechanic and I am into community organizing. I love to read and write. I am expending a lot of energy these days toying with my philosophy of life, and learning how to live for myself. I am alternately quiet and rambunctious, I think it's really important to figure out where my foundations are and where my history is so that I can effectively work to change things without invading anyone else's autonomy. I am working on learning Spanish and how to weld.

PHILOSOPHY

That's a heavy task, boiling that down. Here's a shot at synthesizing it: I think we all have a lot of responsibility to take stock of where we stand in the world, how we use it and what kind of power we have. I think it's really important to learn how to listen and I think it's really important to put myself in situations that I feel unfamiliar with, and see what comes of it. I also think it's really important to have a home, get to know a place, and take care of it.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I have worked at a community bike shop for the last five years and it has taught me a lot, both about building things and teaching things and working with people even when it's tricky. I also work in harm reduction and social services in Vancouver, which is heavy but also I love it, and have met tons of amazing and resilient folks who have taught me a lot.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've stayed at a lot of houses with people I was related to, knew as friends, knew through friends, or didn't know at all, but happened upon. I travel because I feel like it reaffirms my trust in humanity. People have taken me in and taken care of me in incredible ways, far more than was ever necessary for them to do, just because they are kind and interested. I had my best experiences bike touring through the Maritimes in Eastern Canada. Everyone I met was so incredible, people waved me in off the street and offered me a bed. One family invited me to their mum's 82nd birthday party.

兴趣

I am interested in literature and in social justice and environmental issues around the world. I am interested when they overlap. And I love to make music and fix things.

我做过的一件不可思议的事情

I think the best times of my life have been on trains. I remember taking the train through northern India, and the delicious chai tea and the monkeys on the tracks. I was on a train in Romania for my birthday one year, sharing the car with a group of deaf women who were on their way to Turkey for a vacation. And I guess my heart lives in Canada, and taking the train across the prairies and seeing all the colours in the grass and seeing the salmon run in the Rockies and all those million million lakes in Ontario.

I like meeting people who are aware of the social conditions in which they live. I think it's really important to have a firm analysis of my place in the world and how I participate in my society. We're a tricky and complex species, and there are far too many ways in which we hurt each other carelessly.
