About Me
CURRENT MISSION
To live and learn, with laughs and libations along the way!
ABOUT ME
I work at the Ocean Sciences Centre, Memorial University of Newfoundland. The OSC is a cold ocean marine sciences research laboratory located at Logy Bay, just outside of St. Johnâs.
After studying fish biology at the University of Saskatchewan, I noticed that we did not have an ocean and that the winters are damned cold, so moved to British Columbia.
This was part of my master plan to move to a warmer, more southerly location, and Victoria, BC has a warm, Mediterranean-like climate. Unfortunately, underemployment precipitated my move to Newfoundland to do my Masterâs.
Although St. Johnâs is further south than Victoria, I was unaware of the Labrador Current, and quite shocked to find that it brings Arctic water and temperatures and icebergs past Labrador and the island. Sadly, there was no oceanography course at the U of S!!!!.
In Newfoundland, I have worked as a research assistant on cod farming, as a Biology Lab Instructor, and somehow ended up in charge of the Seal Research Facility, and the Aquarist at the OSC.
The seals have now become my family, as my (human) family lives on the other side of Canada.
A few years ago, I noticed two things.
I was spending too much of my time at work.
My friends were dropping dead at a very young age.
I had always known that I was invincible (as youth allows us to), so the fact that others were not living forever first confused me, and then caused me to decide on balancing living with working.
I now make the time to travel.
PHILOSOPHY
Live life.
It is important to make your impact on others whose lives intersect with yours, a positive experience.
Everyone!
A simple acknowledgement that they exist in your world, a smile, a humourous remark.
The teller in the store, the person in the car next to you, the people at work, as well as the the people that are important in your life.
However, as hard as I try, I am afraid that my acknowledgement of very bad drivers who endanger my life is not very positive, but it is definitely an acknowledgement!
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
As I described my first CS experience with CathyL in The Bahamas - it is like visiting old friends that you had not yet met.
Interests
I enjoy nature and water and living things.
I scuba dive (here and away - where the water gets above 10 degrees Celsius) and like photography.
I also have antique vehicles, a 1966 Chevrolet short-box, step side pick-up, and a 1976 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ 40, and my latest, a âhybrid motorcycleâ â a 1976 Puch moped.

Music, Movies, and Books
I still enjoy the cult classics such as The Little Shop of Horrors (1986), Phantom of the Paradise and Rocky Horror Picture Show.
I don’t seem to find the time to read much fiction, and television seems to be mostly science, nature, travel and documentary programs. Although if life seems horribly dismal, a little Jerry Springer Show is very uplifting (life could be a hell of a lot worse).
Jimmy Buffet, Buckwheat Zydeco, Long John Baldry, Santana and latin music that I have come to know in my travels to the Caribbean.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I am and will always be amazed iwth sunrise and sunset over the ocean - and have the "far too many" photos to prove it :)
Teach, Learn, Share
The harp seals dominate my life, and I would be happy to share this experience.
