About Me

CURRENT MISSION

free flow fun

ABOUT ME

I like poorly planned adventures, roadtrips, good beer and cheap wine, hiking.

I'm really laid back and playful, and enjoy those who are. Most days you will find me hiking, walking around town, drinking some beer, reading and laying in the sun, beach combing, or riding around on my goofy old scooter. I just finished up school at Western so I'm taking some time to just enjoy the simple things in life.

Most times I'm very gregarious and out there. It is much more likely I'll be laughing or smiling than not. I love to talk to people and swap travel tales, life perspectives, and learn new things. I'm up for almost any adventure, and will rarely say no to an opportunity.

I work as a deckhand on a boat where the hours are kind of unpredictable, so if you came to stay there would always be the possibility I couldn't hang out and show you around too much.

PHILOSOPHY

It's a work in progress. My main goal in life is to identify what makes me happy and spend time doing it. I think it's important to work towards a cause that you believe in- but also to take the time to enjoy the simple pleasures.

I just read 'The Clock of the Long Now' by Stewart Brand and it really altered my life perspective in a good way. It's all about the speed of technology and society versus the slow pace of change in nature. It made me feel insignificant, humble, and unwise- in the best of ways.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Offering up my couch to surfers (now that I finally have one!) and couchsurfing when I travel.. which will be more often now that I finally have some free time.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Have couchsurfed in Ketchikan, AK and New Orleans, LA. Hosted a couple of surfers from Portland on my couch in Anacortes.

Interests

I'm very much a reader, and love to talk about literature. Recently I've been learning about foraging for wild foods so I've been trying out some new kelp and seaweed recipes. (Super tasty!) I'm made happy by fairly simple things. If I can be out on a boat in the San Juans just looking around I'm happy as a clam. Other people are the most precious part of life to me, I love talking to people and meeting new friends.

Music, Movies, and Books

TC Boyle, Margaret Atwood, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Rebecca Solnit, Mary Oliver, Virginia Woolf, Salman Rushdie, Edward Abbey, Stewart Brand, Norman Maclean... so so many.

Music: always on, much loved.I like the new stuff but also the old.

Movies: Don't really watch TV or Movies too often.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I've seen the sun rise across the skagit valley. I've watched the snow begin to fall from the top of Blakely Island. I saw the sun set in Newport, Oregon over the beach and create a rainbow that stretched over the bridge and ended in the sand.

I went through the Inside Passage by ferry up to Alaska. I slept up on the deck in a sleeping bag even though it was March. When I woke up the first morning on the ferry, the sun was shining and the water was so blue. I laid in my sleeping bag dozing off and on, big waves rocking the boat back and forth, and whenever I woke up the only thing I could see was the sea.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach people how make a smashing gin and tonic, and can talk for hours about Utopian Literature. I want to learn new languages, even if it is just several words. I want to learn how to fish, crab, and harvest oysters and clams. I can teach you how to identify ferns, berries, and trees.
