One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I said, "I'm sorry, I was wrong."

What is the mystery of this mechanism--that some bad men can be made better by treating them as good men? (Socrates called his vociferous interlocutor an "excellent man. This did not make the latter good, but to the degree that Socrates was wise, his methods would have tended to foment goodness, not its opposite. In this light, his treatment of his rude opponent is instructive; he did not shame, belittle, or ridicule him.) Shame can effect change, of course, but it will be the change of deterioration and devastation, followed by diversions and fortification, not change toward freedom and strength and love. We cannot, by applying shame, induce the adoption of virtue. Maybe the mystery is this: that if there are seeds of goodness in a man, they can be watered and nurtured by grace. But if there are no seeds of goodness in him, the gift of grace does not find its object, and he remains unmoved and unchanged.
