About Me

Colin and I live in Raleigh, North Carolina, but before we were married, we lived separately in California, NY, Toronto, Philadelphia, Richmond (Virgnia) and now Raleigh. I was a teacher, then I moved here and started working at a big University. I gather and analyze data about our students and classes, and help figure out how to use our software better.

Colin is newer to Couchsurfing, and I'm not sure how to make my single profile into a profile for more than one person, but most likely we'll be traveling together. He earned a PhD in Entomology (bugs) and enjoys playing video games, making functional pottery, reading, going to trivia nights, and watching good movies and TV shows.

We also love playing with our dog, Reggie!

If you come to Raleigh, you'll find lots of outdoor festivals downtown in the warmer months and not too much from November-March. There are buses, but it's not too easy to get around without a car, especially compared to larger US cities or European cities.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

It's so much fun to hear travel stories about where someone has been, where someone is going, and the most fun or beautiful or exciting places they've been before. Even though we don't have the money or time to travel a lot, couchsurfing is great for hearing about other people's adventures.

I also love to learn how to cook food from other cultures and talk about the similarities and differences between where we live. It's a nice way to stay open minded.

Music, Movies, and Books

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Alana: I taught in city schools in poor communities in Phoenix, AZ, and I learned a lot from the students and their families. My parents were also involved in a similar travel organization called Servas, so our family traveled a lot when I was younger.

Colin: Was the first to discover that termites have a chemical that distinguishes Kings and Queens in the colony. People thought that this happened in ants first, but Colin's research proved that it happened in Termites before ants!

Teach, Learn, Share

I studied evolutionary psychology (new-ish science: neuroscience meets anthropology) with the people who invented it.
