I'm a professor of Asian cinema at the University of Michigan. I mostly teach classes about Japanese cinema and about documentary.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I used to spend a lot of time on couches between hitch-hikes. Then I got hitched. But I want to return to the older mode of transport, the one that puts you in touch with the place and the people that host you.

Music, Movies, and Books

"What's your favorite movie?" This is, of course, the question I'm always asked...and I always refuse to answer. Depends on the day of the week. As for music, today I'm listening to the new Sigur Ros; as for books, Obama's autobiography is on my nightstand.
