About Me

I'm a writer living in New York City, originally from Los Angeles. Currently I'm working on a book about fungi and mycology for Chelsea Green Publishing, and am doing a lot of travel as part of the reporting process. I'm a very conscientious person, hoping to engage others in a reciprocal, non-extractive basis.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I found out about Couchsurfing while traveling with a friend in Japan who introduced me to it. Soon after he convinced me to sign up, I had my first surfing experience in Munich, a highlight experience. I had the privilege of staying with some wonderful people who demonstrated the high quality of the people in this community.

At the moment I'm unable to host, so my participation all happens as a guest of others. I'm very conscious of the generosity of my hosts, and do whatever I can to help out, whether it's cooking meals, cleaning up, or anything else that lives up to my commitment as a gracious guest.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Moving to New York was a major experience in my life. I pretended I already lived here to secure a job interview -- flew out from LA, got the job and signed a lease within two days and flew back home, where I packed up and found myself living in NYC two weeks later. This was right after Hurricane Sandy, and just at the beginning of my first east coast winter. Three days after that, I got word that the job had fallen through, and so began two months of intensive job hunting. By the time I got my first paycheck from a lucky gig at local TV news station, I had 30 dollars in my bank account. It's what I now call "a character-building experience".
