About Me

CURRENT MISSION

A Masters student in Toronto - rediscovering my world family, and remembering why I love Anthropology

ABOUT ME

I'm an educator, both of anthropology and outdoor ed. Continually working on a goal to become bilingual! Soy viajera, artesana, guia de kayak, y estudiante de la antropologia. Quiero mucho ser bilingue :)

PHILOSOPHY

"Even in today's troubled world, peace is more widespread than war." -- Mary Anderson

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Too much to count, both through the site and "unofficially" on my own, travelling through various parts of Canada and Latin America. It's the best way to travel, and I'm glad to have been able to host lately.

Interests

The outdoors, biking, kayaking, kids, storytelling, non-commodified abundance, Ramadan, the ocean, laughing, taking cool photos, doing things that I'm scared of (bungee jumping is a goal), and spontaneous/weird stuff, like polar bear swimming and rolling in the grass, empowering people, Taoism, Jedism, ethical travel and living.

I REALLY love what I'm studying: Anthropology and World Religious Studies! "Place-making", storytelling, peacebuilding and the Toba aborigenes are my academic foci. I love learning other languages, including yours.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: all music, especially including the Beatles, Michael Franti!! and making my own.

Favourite Anthropology book is "Landscapes of Devils" by Gaston Gordillo. Others -- "Life of Pi" by Yann Martel, "The Alchemist" by Paulo Cohelo, and -- Dr. Seuss! I once had a lifetime goal to memorize all of Dr Seuss' work. I plateaued out at 4, but I still tell the Lorax regularly.

Films: Little Miss Sunshine makes me crack up every single time I watch it. And Star Wars has been my favourite film trilogy since I was 4 and I imagine always will be.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I saw my niece born. That tops anything.

Colourfully painting an old rusty playground in South Africa with a lot of kids and a language barrier. So fun and sweet!

Adopting a brother.

On my last day, in Pucallpa, Peru, borrowing a tiny wooden canoe from some locals and paddling across the Amazonian tributary we were on.

Writing "the Anthropology Song" and having it unexpectedly go viral on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHv6rw6wxJY).

Y nadé, con fosforescencia, en el mar. Ahhh ...

Teach, Learn, Share

Baking from scratch, musicmaking, poi spinning, juggling, slacklining, hemp bracelets/beading, and the Spanish language are all things I love to engage with -- teaching and learning. I can teach kayaking, anthropological awareness, and probably a lot of other stuff.

I would LOVE to learn bits of your language(s) or to play around on a djembe / harmonica / guitar together -- I'm not saying I'm particularly talented, just that it's FUN!
