About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To boldly smoke where no man can smoke no more

ABOUT ME

[DISCLAIMER! I'm being overwhelmed by A LOT of requests for my couch or meeting up; You have to know that I don't take in anyone without a completed profile and at least some references. Also, I might not be able to reply to each request/message, I'm truly sorry but it would take up way too much time!]

I've been living in Amsterdam for 7 years now and I love the place. I came from a rural area to the south of the country near Belgium, and I like to think I took some southern joie de vivre with me to the urbanized, Calvinist north.

My biggest love is music, but since I never had the talent or aspiration to make a career out of that, I decided to work in science, which I also loved since I was a kid.

I love to talk about everything, preferably in good company and preferably over a couple of good beers. Because of my job I find I have less and less time these days for fun stuff on the side, but in my free time I like to go dancing at a club or party, or hunting for records (music) in the city, making visits to friends in other cities etc. etc.

PHILOSOPHY

Just say Ohm.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Well, I can provide you with a couch, show you around, maybe even lend you a bike if I have a spare one that's not broken ;) If I'm off work early enough I cook my own food so we can cook something together, etc.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

So I decided to start up my CS profile again after not hosting anyone for years, because I really missed the experiences I had with people from all over the world! See below for some references.

Interests

I think it would make more sense to tell you what I'm not interested in: I'm not interested in sports, nor am I interested in motorized vehicle maintenance, nor am I into stadium rock. I don't mind people with these interests at all, I just don't have anything meaningful to say about these things :P

  • dancing
  • dining
  • cooking
  • beer
  • partying
  • clubbing
  • music
  • cycling
  • hunting
  • sports
  • science

Music, Movies, and Books

I love all sorts of music; especially music with a good rhythm and groove, because I love dancing :D

I don't read as much as I'd want, and I'm a pretty slow reader; I like Dostoevsky, Murakami, Kafka, Joyce.

To the dismay of my movie-loving friends, I only like movies with a happy ending :P and I'm into anime; FLCL, Akira, Cowboy Bebop etc.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I'll fill this one in later.

Teach, Learn, Share

I talk about a lot of stuff. I think it's generally interesting to be around me and you will probably learn random stuff. Hopefully (and usually I think) this will be integrated into the whole that is your knowledge and then I will have contributed. That will have to do.

Also, I think people should be critical of what they learn and how they learn it. There is no such thing as being too critical or too skeptical ever. Being skeptical does not mean being dismissive at all; it simply means honoring knowledge of the highest quality most, and dismissing knowledge which is incomplete, wrong or not useful. Our generation has access to all the information the world has ever produced, if you are not critical you will simply accumulate a lot of junk and be left with an incoherent mess while believing you are smart. While in fact, we are all forever poor bastards fumbling in the dark; respect your stupidity or it will catch up on you.
