My couchsurfing experiences are currently limited to visiting with friends or traveling with them as they see their family and friends.

Just about anything. There are so many choices out there that I usually ask others what their favorites are (books, music, and movies) and give those a chance. I find that you always encounter something that you will enjoy, but would have never even considered before.
