ABOUT ME

I don't want to feel pinned like a butterfly to a board by a description, but to give you an idea as to where I am in the work in progress that is me: I'm an enthusiast for many (too many, my father says) things. I'm an amateur. I'm a country mouse. I grew up in rural Nova Scotia on 100 acres of woodland, pasture and blueberry field paradise, and I go back whenever I can. I also love the life I've made in Calgary, in an amazing cohousing community (only one in Alberta, so far, and I love to share it and show it off, so come by for a common meal!), with great neighbours and friends, a really quirky job, mountains nearby to play in and city culture to explore. I'm gradually coming out of my shell and learning to feel comfortable in my own skin, and it's an exciting process. I'm excited about meeting new people and gaining new perspectives on life and the world, as well as going off on my own to explore my own potential.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I met my first couchsurfer through a conference hosted by the museum where I work. She was attending the conference with a bunch of academic types, and I was so refreshed and intrigued by this adventurous soul. One thing led to another, and soon she was introducing me to her couchsurfing hosts (thanks again!), and making a major detour on her bike trip from Ottawa to New York to come visit my family's farm in Nova Scotia. So, even before becoming officially involved with the couchsurfing community, I've hosted a few surfers in both Nova Scotia and Calgary.
That initial contact with couchsurfing threw me in the path of 3 surfer girls from Australia and New Zealand who were hitch-hiking to Nova Scotia around the time I was flying there myself. They arrived, full of tales of truckers and life on the road, at the family farm shortly before I was due to return to Calgary, but my folks got the benefit of their help and company for a week or so when they stayed on to help out with the annual blueberry harvest.

我做过的一件不可思议的事情

One of the most important things I've experienced so far is a month of monastic life at Gampo Abbey (a Buddhist abbey in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia). Robes, baldness, chanting, silence, sitting and walking meditation, meditative work and eating practises and all.
