ABOUT ME

I'm a fan of reading, cooking, listening to people speak with conviction, long walks (but not necessarily on the beach), physical humor, verbal humor, humility, dirty jokes, witnessing old things, honesty, and people getting turned on by the world even though it's beauty can often be overshadowed by too much ugliness.

Interests

thinking and talking about identity. having an identity. rethinking and then talking more about identity. my little niece and her laugh, seeing amazing things that are really old and having no idea how they came to be, laughing really really hard, being privileged enough to be trusted with a secret, listening, listening to music, feeling jealous of musicians, vegetarian cooking! movies and books are very important too, and hanging out alone with our mama--EARTH. Oh yeah, and saying ridiculously cheesy things like that.

Authors: Dostoevsky, Toni Morrison, Tayeb Salih Joe Sacco, William Faulkner, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Edward Said, Andre Gide, Gabriel Garcia-Marquez, Ibn al-Arabi and mystics in general, John Donne, Pablo Neruda, Dylan Thomas, Lorca of course...Most of these folks have ample legacies that I do not know in their entirety--but cannot choose a favorite work of what I do know, cause they're just so damn good!

Movies: Andrei Rublyov, The Mirror, American Beauty, City of Lost Children, Sense and Sensibility, Todo Sobre de Mi Madre, Rouge, Leningrad Cowboys Do America, Dreams, Ciudad de Deux, Water, 8 1/2, Ship of Fools, Jules et Jim...

Music: Jazz--just about my favorite thing from American culture. Old jazz from the 20's to Miles' retirement. I love all kinds of international music Sufi, Punjabi, Arabic, Spanish, Latino. I really love classic rock and roll from the 60's and 70's as well as loungy stuff like Serge Gainsbourg. I love Italian opera and modern classical musicians like Shostakovich, Satie, and Messiaen. I don't even know how to begin to describe the profundity of music, so forgive me for repeating how much "I love" this art. I am at the mercy of clichés with this list-making. Alas, we should talk more in person.
