About Me

Eat all the things.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

My parents have always taught me that "different people do things differently" - no one way of doing things is right or wrong, good or bad, just different (as long as you're not hurting anyone).

This idea has been hugely important throughout my life, and it has fuelled my interest in seeing and learning about these different ways of living. From what you eat for dinner to what religion you follow, my personal philosophy is to be open-minded and interested in everything that people share with me.

As a result, I've had some pretty great Couchsurfing experiences. I've surfed and met with people in Hungary, Indonesia, Vietnam, New Zealand, Canada, and the USA; highlights include home cooked spring rolls in Yogya, Indonesia; a hilarious rainy camping trip to a hippie commune on Vancouver Island; and staying in a caravan in a driveway in suburban Portland.

Music, Movies, and Books

So many.
Music: Ben Harper, The Black Keys, Emeli Sande. Big band jazz/swing. Bands where people actually play instruments and can sing.

Amelie is my all-time favourite movie.

Books/Authors: Bill Bryson, Roald Dahl, The God of Small Things, biographies, historical fiction. I'm currently reading 100 Years of the Best American Short Stories, and it's wonderful.

And some New Zealand ones you may never have heard of:
Fat Freddy's Drop, Electric Wire Hustle, Boy, What We Do In The Shadows, Katherine Mansfield, Witi Ihimaera.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Spending three months living at a home and school for children with disabilities in Bangkok, Thailand really made me realise that kids will be kids, no matter what life throws at them. And that all you need to get along with any kid is a dorky smile and a raft of silly noises.

Teach, Learn, Share

Above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you, because the greatest secrets are hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.
- Roald Dahl.
