About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Working towards an egalitarian society with respect for weirdness!

ABOUT ME

(en español abajo )
These days I'm sort of a full time activist and independent journalist- although sometimes I do other stuff to pay the bills. Have an academic background in Anthropology, which involved spending time in Guatemala, learning spanish and about Maya culture, history and current clashes with corporate mining (they are stealing the land and killing people and horrible stuff like that) In the past I have worked as a computer programmer, editor, construction (i kinda suck at that), teacher, computer repair...and some other stuff that's even more nuts.

What's my culture? I went to primary school in Toronto, where I was one of the only kids in the class whose parents spoke English at home. Although I come of white Canadian settler stock, my family culture was much different. My mom, for example, had lived in Japan for a year so we all ate Japanese food and seriously studied Judo at a very traditional dojo. My church was catholic, and the majority of people there were from somewhere else. Later, when my family moved to Oshawa, I discovered that although my ethnic background was 'white Canadian', I felt really alientated from the culture there.

I'm finally back in Toronto, which is really awesome. I'm doing a lot of activism, independent media and stuff like that, being a giant hippie, basically.

Crecia en Canada en Toronto y Oshawa. Hablo espñanol bien, pero siempre neccecito mas practica!

PHILOSOPHY

I believe that life is about learning about other ways of living, and choosing a good way for yourself. Interesting ways of living could be around the world, or with your own family. Only by having lots of different experiences can you find out what makes you happy. And then you have to do the things that will make your life as awesome as possible.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Been a member for over a year now. I couched surfed in Montreal, and have been doing more couch-surfing with friends of friends since joining the site: My favorite was a 4 day stay in Ottawa in an activist house that became an ongoing philosophical discussion/praxis about activism, social justice and organizing so intense that you didn't want to leave it for a minute, even to go to the bathroom. I've been meeting people in my town who are coming through on couchsurfing, and I toured a Tanzanian human rights journalist through my Grandmother's town in the country. A lot of this hasn't been happening formally through the website, but has come out of the philosophy here, of trust and engagement. I've been meeting people for coffee in Oshawa and hanging out, trying to make more community here: that's a work in progress.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Couch surfed at Gaetan's awesome place in Montreal, it was such a great experience, couldn't have been better. I've been to Montreal before, but met no one and only looked at the city. Gaetan took us out with his friend's and got to chill out with people speaking a random mix of English, Japanese, French and Spanish. Have had a bunch of couchsufers, mostly through references from friends in other cities and less through the website itself.

fuimos a montreal con mi hermana y su novio y couchsurfed en la sofa du Gaetan. Es una experiencia muy bueno!

Interests

I am interested in lots of stuff, I will read any silly magazine if I am trapped in a room with it... I'm an anthropologist because I like learning stuff about people and their lives and perspectives. Right now I am seriously into political theory and culture, as well as spanish and indigenous issues, and am learning the guitar. (yes i am a nerd) In the past I have been obsessed with computer programming, martial arts, outdoor survival, running, singing, musical theatre, poetry, writing, math...and these things are still part of me even though my current pursuits are other things.
