PHILOSOPHY
I went to high school with a poet. She's incredible, she will be one of our time's greats if that what she wants from life. This poem reflects my personal philosophy as coherently as it's ever really possible to reflect such things:
To my sister, from a distance
At four in the morning you call me. "I can't sleep." You tell me about snow wedged under your fingernails. You haven't left your room for a week now. Bananas are mushy in winter. Also, they're full of little strings. You tell me about therapists in Boston, the boy you miss badly. You had a fight with him over breakfast. In fact, the smell of pancakes fills you with rough sobs.
You want to be gathered in a basket like chicken eggs, collected like a smashed statue and reassembled later. You want to be held up on every side, passed from arm to arm like a newborn child.
Here's what you told me. When the emperor came to the city he walked on the cupped hands of the peasantry. It was like those walkways strewn with magnolia blossoms. His feet never touched the pavement. You want to be lifted above the earth, walking on a path of open hands.
Well, I won't put my hand under your foot, if that's what you're saying. But here's something to carry you. I'll tell you a folk tale; I think it's Norwegian. A girl is looking for the sun. She has to climb to the sun's fortress, which sits on a platform high above the constellations.
A ladder of bones leads up to the sun, a ladder of femurs and vertebrae. It's tied together by sinews, studded with the barbs of chicken feet. The girl grips the steps. She's climbing through clouds of migrating birds, and her hands are cracked with cold. She can see the sun's fort, draped with the skins of polar bears. It's too white to look at. The sun wears robes of white fox fur, and light scatters from the tip of each hair.
She tires easily in the thin air, and finally she slips a few inches. There's a gap in the ladder, and she can't find a foothold anymore. So she chops off her thumb. She fits it in the ladder. Then she cuts through her pinky to make another rung. She puts her foot on her own pinky bone and keeps climbing. She climbs one step at a time, balancing on her own limbs.
Listen, here's what I'm saying. You'll be alright, you'll be alright. She climbed up that ladder with her own hand under her foot.
