About Me

I'm a 31 year old filmmaker born and raised in Miami, Florida. I've lived in San Francisco and New York and spent time in LA. I love learning new cities.

I make movies for a living and travel whenever i get the opportunity. I prefer good conversation to night clubs and love exploring new places by sampling the food, hiking and going to museums, movies and theater.

I was a vegetarian for the first 30 years of my life and only recently started eating fish (so my diet is pretty restricted). I've traveled a lot INSIDE the USA, but only a little outside of it. I spent a month in Spain after I graduated college, and a month in Brazil for work. I spent 24 hours in Morocco and a weekend in the Bahamas.

I'm currently traveling Hong Kong and making a documentary about art and what it means to be an artist.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I make a pretty terrible tourist and I love seeing places like a local. Couch surfing is the best way to meet people and learn about a new place - guide books only take you so far.

Interests

Strange and unusual movies. Photographers that stage reality in a subversive and theatrical way. Random literary artifacts. The astonishingly intricate comic books of Chris Ware. Also, I play the banjo (poorly) and am learning to sail.

My instagram feed (@keyboardonfire) is mostly a compendium of strange signs I've seen and photographed. I have a collection of water bottles containing sand and ocean that I've gathered from bodies of water around the world.

I like exploring the outdoors, but I'm not much of a daredevil. Hiking is great. Leaping off cliffs? Not so much.

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies:
Full Frontal by Steven Soderbergh, The Treasure of Sierra Madre, Gerry, Star Wars with the love only fan boys can give and host of smaller, obscure American Independent Films. Ma, by Celia Rowlson Hall is one of the most haunting and beautiful things I've ever seen. Upstream Color, by Shane Carruth is another. Time Crimes by Nacho Vigalondo is a top notch time travel crime thriller.

I love documentaries - Touching the Void, Man on Wire, Protagonist by Jessica Yu, and The Imposter stand out to me, but there are so many others. Cutie and the Boxer, Dear Zachary, The Thin Blue Line - all great great great films.

Music: I'm open to all sorts of music, but my audio of choice are podcasts. I'm a bit of a junkie that way. This American Life, Radiolab, Startup, Reply All, WTF w Marc Maron.

Books: I just read The Name of the Wind and loved it. Looking forward to the third one in the series. The Forever War was great and the Great Gatsby is an all time favorite. Non-Fiction: The Lean Startup and Creativity Inc are two recents favs. The Swamp, a history of the Florida Everglades, is another great one. The amazing adventures of Kavalier and Clay is the top of my list.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Running across the overseas highway in the Florida Keys at 3am as part of a 191 mile relay race from Miami to Key West. It was glorious.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can make a number of delicious vegetarian meals. (I've been making these meals for a very long time.)

I can also show a true beginner a few useful things on a banjo. If you're more than a true beginner, you could probably teach me a thing or two.

I'm full of arcane and weird information about Miami, the city in Florida where I'm from.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Conversations about Art, Movies, New Media and Philosophy. Unique cuisine (I can make vegetarian Cuban Food!)

Countries I’ve Visited
