One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

It was a normal morning in the heart of Athens, somewhere around 9 or 10 a.m. I was just wandering the streets, aimless and bored, when something caught my eye—a high peak in the distance. I had no plan, no reason, but suddenly I felt drawn to it. Without thinking twice, I decided to head straight for it. No water, no food, no phone, no wallet, barefoot, and eventually I ditched my t-shirt too. It was just me and the climb.

Hours passed. The sun had long set, and darkness crept in. The temperature dropped, the wind picked up, and I could feel the cold biting at my skin. My feet were sore, my body aching, and the thirst… the thirst was unbearable. I was scared, really scared, but I couldn’t stop. I was too far in to turn back now.

As I climbed higher, just when the fear started gripping me harder, I heard it—a distant rumble. Fireworks. Somewhere behind me, a show had started. For a moment, the sound filled the silence around me. I wiped the warm tears from my cheeks, tears that weren’t just from the cold but from the fear of being so exposed, so alone. I kept moving forward, too afraid to look back.

Then, suddenly, a sharp, cold breeze hit me full force, almost knocking me off balance. It was as if the wind itself was urging me to turn around, and with a quiet surrender, I did.

And there it was.

The whole city of Athens spread out beneath me like a sea of lights. The fireworks exploded in the distance, huge purple bursts lighting up the sky. It was… breathtaking. For a few seconds, I forgot everything—the cold, the fear, the thirst. I just stood there, watching the city below, feeling like I was part of something bigger.

But I couldn’t stay. I turned back toward the peak. It was close now, I could see it. As I got closer, though, I saw something I hadn’t expected—a 3-meter fence, topped with barbed wire. My heart sank. But at that point, turning back wasn’t an option. I was too cold, too exhausted. I had no choice but to keep going.

I noticed a small hole, just below the barbed wire. It wasn’t much, but it was enough. I squeezed through, barely fitting. But as I crouched there in the hole, my heart dropped again—two layers of barbed wire lay right in front of me, side by side. There was no way I could clear both, but I had to try.

I jumped.

I landed right on the second layer with both feet, the sharp barbs digging into my skin. My hands hit the ground hard in front of me, trying to catch myself. But strangely, I didn’t feel any pain—not in the moment. I pulled my feet out, stepping over to the other side. Bleeding, half-naked, cold, thirsty, and scared, I stood at the top. I made it!
