Once the home of the world’s most powerful empire, Rome is the most historic city in Europe and arguably the world. There are so many beautiful sights to see here that walking aimlessly around the city is often the best way to experience Rome, and that’s exactly what many of the laid-back locals do. Step back into ancient history with a trip to the Pantheon and the Colosseum, the largest amphitheater ever built. Cross the monument-lined Bridge of Angels to Castel Sant’Angelo, then make your way to the famous Trevi Fountain and make a wish by throwing a coin with your right hand over your left shoulder into the water.

The city of Rome also contains the Vatican City State, which is the center of the Roman Catholic Church. This walled city-within-a-city is filled with wonderful Baroque and Renaissance architecture and vast green gardens. Here, you can marvel in wonder at Michaelangelo’s masterpiece on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, or walk into the sacred chapel of St. Peter’s Basilica.
