Nestled on the shore of Lake Geneva and skirted by picturesque mountain peaks, Lausanne enjoys a postcard-worthy setting in western Switzerland. The city skyline is dominated by the giant gothic Lausanne Cathedral, but visitors will want to explore the city’s many districts, each with its own unique personality. Begin in the Ouchy district, the chic lakeside district that’s teeming with walkers, cyclists, and skaters. Check out Quartier du Flon for a more modern setting with great shopping and the city’s best nightlife.
For a great day trip, hop on a boat for a ride to Chateau de Chillon, a wonderful castle perched on the very edge of Lake Geneva with snowcapped peaks in the background. If boats aren’t your preferred travel method, take a 15 minute drive to the town of Vevey, one of the “Pearls of the Swiss Riviera.” Vevey features a long promenade on the lake, lined with palm trees and tropical flowers with great views of the French Alps. It’s also the former home of Charlie Chaplin, so visitors can snap a picture with the statue created in his honor.
