Bergen is Norway’s second largest city, tucked into an array of islands and fjords carved out by the frigid waters of the North Sea. This city is multicultural and bohemian, yet still traditionally Scandinavian with a laid-back lifestyle and great respect for nature. A must-see for any trip to Bergen is a trip to the top of Mt. Fløyen (by foot or the famous funicular) for a mesmerizing view of the city surrounded by mountains and sea. Back down on street level, be sure to stroll down the waterside strip of historic wooden buildings known as Bryggen, and stop in Madame Felle for a smoked salmon smørbrød (open-faced sandwich) and a pint of Hansa, proudly brewed in Bergen.

One of the most popular things to do on Norway’s west coast is taking a fjord cruise, most of which set out from the docks in Bergen. There are packages of all types and all prices, the simplest offering a boat trip into the fjords and back, and the more involved ones offering multi-day tours to several fjords, towns, and even glaciers. No matter which you choose, it’s going to be an unforgettable experience.
