Gothenburg is center of Swedish culture on the western coast, with its neoclassical architecture, trendy cafés, and vibrant art scene. Its waterfront is a testament to the city’s maritime history, with ships, aquariums, and the freshest fish money can buy. In fact, one of the best ways to see the city and get a sense of the seafaring tradition here is by renting a kayak to explore Gothenburg’s canals. And for a more extensive sea voyage, go to the Saltholmen tram stop to board a boat to the Southern Archipelago. This is a group of more than 20 scenic islands that you can explore by foot or bike, complete with charming historic villages dating back to the 18th century.

Back in the heart of Gothenburg, spend some time in the Haga district, one of the oldest parts of the city. This is a pedestrian zone lined with wooden houses that now host shops and cafés. Be sure to stop in for a cup of coffee and a Hagabullen, a plate-sized cinnamon bun that is a signature treat from Haga.
